The cyber security landscape has changed significantly over the past decade. Organisations are investing more in security, boards are more engaged with cyber risk, and regulatory requirements continue to evolve. Despite this progress, breach rates remain stubbornly high. The UK Government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/2026 found that 43% of UK businesses experienced a cyber attack or breach in the past year, highlighting a gap between investment and measurable security outcomes.
One explanation lies in how organisations understand risk. While security tools continue to generate increasing volumes of data, relatively few organisations invest in the intelligence needed to interpret it. Just 11% of UK businesses report using threat intelligence, and fewer than one in three conduct formal cyber security risk assessments. As attack surfaces expand and environments become more complex, the ability to connect information, identify what matters and prioritise action is becoming just as important as the technologies themselves.
