Solving the AI bottleneck

Category: News
Published: 12th December 2025

The rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and High-Performance Computing (HPC) is reshaping data-centre infrastructure.

In just a few years, these workloads have evolved from specialised applications to primary engines of traffic expansion and architectural transformation. Unlike traditional cloud and enterprise services, AI and HPC require extremely dense, high-bandwidth communication across thousands of compute nodes – pushing Ethernet technology to its limits.

To keep pace, data centres are moving into a new era of performance demands. The shift to 800 Gbps Ethernet is already in progress, with 1.6 Tbps Ethernet (TE) emerging as the next major milestone. These ultra-high-speed links are essential for supporting massive GPU clusters that power large-scale model training and real-time AI inference.

This excellent white paper from our colleagues at Teledyne LeCroy Xena, “Solving the AI Bottleneck”, explores why Terabit Ethernet (1.6 Tbps) is the next critical step for AI and HPC workloads, and how innovations like PAM4 modulation, Co-packaged Optics, and energy-efficient designs are shaping the future of networking.
