What is a tethered fiber optic drone?

Published: 5th May 2026

Tethered fiber optic drones are quickly gaining traction in defence and surveillance – and for good reason.

Unlike conventional drones that rely on radio frequency (RF) signals, these systems use a physical optical fiber link to stay connected to the operator. Instead of transmitting data through the air, everything – control, telemetry, and high-definition video – is sent via light through an optical fiber.

The result? A direct, secure, and interference-free connection that behaves more like a wired system than a wireless one.

How it works

At the heart of the system is a compact onboard canister containing a spool of ultra-thin optical fiber. As the drone flies, the fiber smoothly unspools in real time, maintaining a continuous link to the ground station.

There’s no need for antennas or RF spectrum. The fiber acts as a dedicated communication line, delivering stable, high-bandwidth data, real-time video with minimal latency, and reliable, uninterrupted control.

The fiber itself is incredibly fine, often just a few hundred microns thick and may be reinforced for durability using advanced materials like Kevlar.

Why not just use wireless RF drones?

Traditional RF drones offer flexibility, but they come with risks. Wireless signals can be detected, jammed, intercepted, and degraded by terrain or interference.

Fiber optic drones avoid these issues entirely because they don’t emit RF signals. They are virtually invisible to detection systems and immune to electronic interference.

Think of it like the difference between wireless and hard-wired security systems – when reliability and security matter most, physical connections still win.

Key tethered fiber optic drone advantages

  • Security: No RF emissions means no signal to detect, intercept, or jam
  • Reliability: Unaffected by weather, congestion, or electromagnetic interference
  • Performance: Consistent high-speed data, low latency, and crystal-clear video feeds

Where are tethered fiber optic drones used?

These systems are ideal for environments where security and reliability are critical, including: military operations and reconnaissance, surveillance in contested or high-risk areas, law enforcement and public safety scenarios, and sensitive facility monitoring.

However, as demand increases, access to high-quality bare optical fiber is becoming a bottleneck. Most organisations struggle to source the volumes required without established supply relationships – making trusted partners more important than ever.
